Paul A. Sutherland, Rockhopper penguns in courtship display in a breeding colony in a rocky crag on a remote island in southern Patagonia, Argentina Like all other penguin species they are found only in the Southern Hemisphere and generally on subantarctic islands where they form large noisy breeding colonies which ring with the sounds of penguins calling to each other in the the throes of courtship rituals. Rockhopper penguins feed primarily on a variety of squid and krill. Rockhopper penguins are one of the crested penguins and are characterized by red eyes and bright yellow feather tufts over each eye brow. Rockhoppers have been described as fearless and bad-tempered by scientists. They use their sharp beaks to protect themselves and encourage intruders to leave nesting sites. The population is considered vulnerable by the World Conservation Union with an estimated 1,882,000 pairs of rockhopper penguins remaining in the world, having been hunted for their oil at one time. George Steinmetz/ASA / ASA, 95% of the world population of elegant terns (some 70,000 birds) gathers each spring to nest on Isla Rasa in the Sea of Cortés, between Baja California and the Mexican mainland. Elegant terns create their nesting colonies inside colonies of heermanns gulls, which are able to protect the terns by beating off attacks by yellow-footed gulls. Enriqueta Velarde, a Mexican scientist who studies birds on Rasa each nesting season, says this kind of egg predation is more common in years of poor fishing, as the gulls have less to eat.
